Veterans Day, originally known as Armistice Day, is a federal holiday in the United States observed annually on November 11 to honor military veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces. This date coincides with other commemorations, such as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, observed in various countries to mark the anniversary of the end of World War I. The major hostilities of World War I officially ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, when the Armistice with Germany took effect. In 1954, following advocacy from prominent U.S. veteran organizations, the holiday was renamed Veterans Day.
